The UNM-Gallup director candidate talks start tonight with Gallup City Councilor Rudy Salazar, principal of Indian Hills Elementary, answering questions from the community, faculty, and staff at 8 p.m. in Gurley Hall. Remaining candidates include Gilbert Duran on Thursday, John Phillips on October 28, and Vincent Murphy on October 29, all at UNM-Gallup.
City officials voiced concern over federal block grants and revenue sharing as they meet with Sen. Pete Domenici staff. They warned of state control risks to a $2.25 million grant and urged preserving revenue sharing while noting cuts and new rules could delay or redirect funds for senior programs airports and mining communities.

The Gallup recreation center $1.7 million project is halted as supplier Kinematics delays on shipping up to 150000 worth of filtration and control panels. General manager Gary Newport cites unresolved issues among the contractor Colton Construction designer Milton Costello and McKinley County, with city involvement pending completion. Newport refuses details, saying disclosure may delay resolution.
Gallup officials received a seed packet in the mayor's mail after Father Roy Barton joked at a meeting about filling the recreation center pool with flowers. Mayor Wayne Lewis noted construction delays and blamed late equipment shipments from Kinematics Ltd. The seed packet, with no return address, was shown at an informal session and Lewis plans to keep it on hand as a reminder of the quip and ongoing delays at Harold R. Runnels Recreation Center.
Americans' personal spending slowed sharply in September while personal income rose 0.8 percent. Auto rebates boosted August sales, but September spending fell, with housing starts at a low and factory use dipping. Inflation adjusted GDP likely declined, as auto and housing weakness widen. The President notes a slight recession, with rates easing only gradually.
