Economy shows signs of slipping toward recession in September

Americans' personal spending slowed sharply in September while personal income rose 0.8 percent. Auto rebates boosted August sales, but September spending fell, with housing starts at a low and factory use dipping. Inflation adjusted GDP likely declined, as auto and housing weakness widen.
