Tax hike irks Zuni merchants
Zuni merchants urge Tribal Council to meet at 1:30 p m Wednesday to discuss the new 1 percentage point sales tax increase from 5.5 to 6.5 percent effective November 1. They note Zuni already has the highest rate in the area, with McKinley County at 5.625 percent and Gallup at 6.1875 percent. Running Bear Trading Post manager Kit South, a non Zuni owner, said he also pays about 6 percent state tax on top of the pueblo tax.

Battle of the bands in Gallup high schools

Hopi Tuvi Gathering adds dances races in Moenkopi weekend
Mary Wicott reports Moenkopi Arizona hosts the fourth Hopi Tuvi Gathering with as many as 20 dance groups. The event in conjunction with the Western Navajo Fair features free meals and dances, races, booths, and crafts Saturday and Sunday at Route 160 and Route 264 across from Tuba City Truck Stop. Dancers from Arizona and New Mexico include Zuni Navajo Hopi and Havasupai. Registration ongoing with fees and contact numbers provided. Indictments include no videotaping for non-Indians and a $20 fee for Indians.
