Salazar among four finalists for Gallup campus director

Gallup councilor Rudy Salazar is among four finalists for UNM Gallup Campus director. Finalists include John Phillips Gilbert Duran and Vincent Murphy. Interviews will be held Tuesday in Gurley Hall with faculty staff and community participation. Duran Phillips Murphy have separate interview dates later in October.

Anaconda to Close Uranium Mines in New Mexico

Anaconda Copper Co plans a March 31 1982 closure of uranium mining and milling near Grants New Mexico affecting about 800 employees at the Jackpile Mine on the Laguna Reservation and the Bluewater mill. The firm will mothball the mill with limited maintenance staff and may keep a small presence at Jackpile with Laguna Pueblo and federal agency concurrence.

Moshe Dayan Dead at 66 After Heart Attack in Israel

Israeli leader Moshe Dayan dies of a heart attack at age 66 just as the Sabbath begins. The famed soldier statesman, who helped negotiate peace with Egypt, was mourned by Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Begin ordered a state funeral. Dayan will be buried at Nahalal as he had requested.

Grazing Permits To Be Delivered In Hopi Partitioned Area

Reward Offered for Gallup Death Clues

The Crime Stoppers Commission offers a $1,000 reward for information about the death of Johnny Edward Bailey whose badly beaten body was found Feb 26 six miles south of Gallup on NM 32. Bailey, about 6 feet tall with arm tattoos, was a horse trainer who lived in Santa Fe and Milan recently and was last seen trying to hitch a ride near the crime scene. Plutonium exposure at Los Alamos under review

A Los Alamos National Laboratory chemist, among 15 workers exposed to a mislabeled plutonium container, may have inhaled material into the lungs. Health officials say inhalation is possible but hope for full normal life if exposure is limited. 25 workers studied previously showed normal or below cancer incidence. The incident involves a metal canister about the size of a cigar stub and follows decontamination efforts.
