GALLUP The 1995 Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial fiscal results show a loss of $5,119.22 after total expenditures of $401,320.99 and revenues of $396,201.77. Attendance declined about 11 percent, with turnstile counts around 24,000 versus 27,500 ticketed attendees, and cash reserves have dwindled from $90,000 to $60,000.
WINDOW ROCK A casting call for a Budweiser commercial drew both Navajo actors and protestors Saturday afternoon. About sixty men plus women and children posed for Polaroid and screen tests at the Navajo Nation Inn while a small group across the highway protested the promotion of alcohol. The controversy centered on potential Native American casting and local concerns about alcohol use, with organizers and supporters debating the project’s impact and intent.
GALLUP All the fun footage turned serious at Saturday's Gallup Film Festival Native American Day. Fidel Moreno spoke on documenting elder stories and preserving heritage, previewing Keepers of the Fire in progress. The event intertwined talks on storytelling, elderly needs, and Native politics with Moreno sharing personal tales.
Navajo Nation President Albert Hale, addressing the Navajo Nation Council, warned funding for Native American programs could be trimmed further despite calls for restoration beyond 86 billion dollars. He urged ongoing lobbying, fiscal caution, and year round advocacy as he cited plan to limit travel off the reservation and referenced Fort Wingate negotiations. Rebecca Lynch, longtime educator and administrator with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, retires after a 42 year career in education. Starting as a teacher in 1953 and moving into administration in 1970, she held posts from Rough Rock to Chinle Agency and Navajo Education leadership. Lynch plans reading and painting at home with her husband John, and a move after earning another degree.
