Navajo Nation debate clears two questions
Tuesday evening the Navajo Nation presidential and vice presidential candidates answered clearly that the council should not act on the proposed northeastern Arizona water rights settlement and that a woman can lead the Nation if qualified. Lynda Loverjoy and Ben Shelly led the ticket with Earl Tulley and Rex Lee Jim as running mates.

Drunk driving arrest after rear-end collision in Gallup
Gallup police and sheriff deputies were kept busy by alcohol related incidents. Marvin Benally, 19, of Gallup, was charged with driving while intoxicated following too closely and two counts of child abuse after his GMC pickup rear-ended another vehicle on U S Highway 491 near Hamilton Road. He denied drinking but failed field sobriety tests and showed two children ages 14 and 4 in his front seat. Benally was taken to the Gallup McKinley Adult Detention Center and recorded a breath test of 0.0. James C Watchman, 36, of Fort Defiance, was pulled over near mile marker 9.5 on New Mexico Highway 264 for weaving. further details follow on another page.

Early voting under way in Gallup County races slow start
Early voting began in Gallup with 340 voters at the Gallup site and 294 absentee requests. Election Director Rick Palochak notes the slow start may reflect an earlier kickoff this year.
