Navajo Americorps volunteers join Round Rock schools
Five weeks into the school year, twenty Americorps members work across Round Rock Elementary, Junior High, Headstart, and the Navajo Culture Institute. At a grand opening, officials from Navajo Community College and local government praised the program. Members tutor after school, visit homes or hogans to plan with parents, and emphasize Navajo language and social studies. Each earns 1,700 hours, plus a scholarship. director Monty Roessel notes they will defer half pay until government funds arrive.

Jam Zone 95 Aims Drug Free Fun For Tuba City Youth
Tuba City Arizona hosts Jam Zone 95 a drug free youth event set for Thursday Oct 19 from 7 to 10 pm at Basha’s parking lot. The first time effort sponsored by the Tuba City Community Youth Council and Police Department with Phoenix Suns Cardinals and local businesses. Police Officer Ron Brown says it offers a safe zone for ages 12 to 18 with no drugs alcohol or gang colors. Activities include a three on three basketball tourney a car and truck audio show a DJ from KMGN Radio contests and prizes including CD players donated by area businesses and Suns and Arizona Lottery prizes. Navajo Hopi police and state highway officers will participate some in uniform. Brown says the event shows cooperation across communities and a positive side of adults off duty with an expected 300 youths.
