Cargo plane crashes into Mount Taylor killing pilot

A Cessna 182 modified as a small cargo aircraft slammed into the west side of Mount Taylor early Wednesday killing the pilot, with the crash site treated as a biohazard due to spilled samples. State police, search teams and rescue crews searched the rugged area while investigators noted a possible engine problem.

Sparky Demonstrates Fire Safety To Navajo Children

About 100 pupils in Window Rock learned fire safety during Fire Prevention Week. Sparky the Fire Dog and Navajo Nation Fire and Rescue showcased actions to escape flames, stop drop and roll, and check doors. Johnathan Yazzie narrated. Students received helmets, trucks, coloring books, and safety materials.

One election grievance remains

Diné Bureau reports that only one Navajo general election grievance will be heard at 9 a.m. Oct. 18 by the Office of Hearings and Appeals after most protests from Sept. 5 voting were dismissed. The hearing concerns whether Lucinda Henry met residency requirements to seek the chapter presidency amid other dismissals for lack of stated violation or standing.

Child dies in fire near Red Rock housing unit

A 5 year old Navajo boy died after being trapped in a burning mobile home near Red Rock Chapter south of Gallup. Fire responders arrived about ten minutes after the call as authorities investigated the blaze and ruled out entry by other residents. Police cited a suspected butane heater as a possible cause. The name of the deceased was withheld.

Four schools honored for improvement rewards

Four local schools received funds for high improvement. Church Rock Elementary $19,150 Red Rock Elementary $21,156 David Skeet Elementary $16,455 Bluewater Elementary $7,224 A-Shiwi Elementary $28,037 were recognized after comparing 1998 99 with 1999 2000 test scores.
