Tina Chee of Crystal New Mexico reports a burglar smashed a bedroom window and stole about 1200 in personal items from her home. She notes repeated break ins by neighbors in recent months and fears for her two children while the community faces rising property crime.
A U S grand jury indicted Leander Curley Henry Francisco and Ronnald Bydoniz for a Sept 6 1966 beating and stabbing death of William Michell Harker of Tuba City. The three face first degree murder and related charges with possible life imprisonment and fines.
Navajo Nation President Milton Bluehouse Sr. appoints Richard K. Begay and Loren Tapahe as co chiefs of staff to share duties, replace resigned Jefferson Begay. Begay will guide goals and oversee executive staff. Tapahe will run divisions. Both bring degrees from OSU and BYU respectively.
At a Gallup meeting the New Mexico Pediatric Society urged treating firearms as a public health issue not a civil liberty matter. Dr. John Ratmeyer compared gun safety to anti smoking and car safety efforts, urging guns be kept out of children's environments and stored unloaded and locked. He cited studies that show homes with guns increase risk of death from self harm and homicide and emphasized physician outreach in well child visits to advise parents.
City Editor Steve Devitt reports on Gallup where Michelle Burks, 26, has spent 11 years in prison after murder conviction at 15. CSC boss Harold Bass defends McKinley County facility as clean and well run despite inmate complaints. An NM association of counties audit praised the facility, while Oregon inmate transfers and deportation plans raise questions.
