Pueblo Pintado Powwow Highlights School Talent

Pueblo Pintado Boarding School students hosted a powwow with dancing and singing Friday. Lake Valley and Ojo Encino students joined in solo and group performances, followed by adult dances. Arts and crafts booths and Native foods complemented the event. Funds support school projects. It marked the dancers' second consecutive week of public showcases after Crownpoint Boarding School participation.

Gallup to sponsor NAACP conference in New Mexico

Gallup hosts the 30th Annual New Mexico Conference of the NAACP at The Inn in Gallup. More than 400 attendees expected for two days of programs for adults and youth with sessions on budgets, federal cuts, energy, stress coping, and a Klan workshop. Youth tours Window Rock, Navajo Nation capital, and a Saturday banquet features Rupert Richardson.

A Gallup deputy helped recover multiple stolen vehicles and arrest 18 year old Rusty Hobbs after incidents on Coal Avenue and U S 666. Hobbs was questioned in connection with a Greyhound depot theft and a burglary at T R Market. Vehicles were found with transmission shop receipts. tires and gasoline were stolen in the Market burglary.

No charges filed in Chinle man's fatal Gamerco stabbing

District attorney rules no charges will be filed in the death of 23 year old Danny Van Winkle who was stabbed in Gamerco on July 29. Askie Thompson of Cedar Point was questioned. sheriff’s deputies say Thompson suffered a broken leg and multiple people were involved in a fight over a bottle of wine. The DA cited self defense against an unprovoked attack as the basis for the decision.
