McKinley County Rejects HUD Grant Offer
McKinley County Commissioners rejected a HUD grant package of 1.5 million dollars over three years to subsidize rent for 20 low income homes. Star Railroad Plans Continue
Star Lake Railroad in eastern McKinely County moves toward June 1979 construction pending a final EIS by mid-February. The 114 mile line from the Santa Fe main to coal fields would be built in three phases, cost about one million dollars per mile, and cross multiple roads and tribal lands. The spur to South Hospah, Star Lake Junction, and Gallo Wash area would increase coal tonnage from 2.5 million in 1980 to about 60 million by 1990, with 2,854 acres of land acquired for the project.
