The Navajo Supreme Court upheld the 1987 Navajo Labor Relations Board ruling that APS hiring policy violated the Navajo Preference in Employment Act by nepotism based on marital relations. The decision affects 18 workers over 34 months who were denied or lost jobs. a later court hearing paused layoffs at the Four Corners Power Plant until November. APS plans to appeal and seek federal clarification, citing lease and tribal agreements.
State police in Farmington said a Shiprock man, Larry Kinsel, 35, was killed when struck by a vehicle as he tried to cross U.S. 64 west of Farmington. The accident occurred at 7:40 p.m. on Wednesday and he died at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington at 8:22 p.m.
Iola Nez of near Cuba New Mexico and Jean Griffin Markley of North Bend Oregon met at the Chaco Old Timers Reunion. They recalled summers in the canyon in the early 1930s helping the Griffins, riding ponies, and studying archaeology with Dr. Edgar Lee Hewitt. The event drew about 170 attendees under an open tent, with memories of bad roads, heat, mud, and a mummified dog prank. Park officials planned another gathering next year.
The House approved four bills including the Zuni Land Conservation Act of 1990 authorizing 25 million dollars to aid the Zuni tribe and the Interior Department to address erosion on the 408000 acre reservation in exchange for dropping a long standing lawsuit. The package also protects Glorieta National Battlefield in New Mexico and funds a broader land and water plan.
A proposed bill would enlarge Pecos National Park by 682 acres at the Civil War battlefield heart, adding a Glorieta unit with exhibits on Kozlowski, Pigeon, and Johnson ranch sites. A separate measure would authorize Forest Service land acquisitions and a 1.6 million payment to Dunigan Enterprises for a 1966 land exchange with the federal government.
