He notes impacts could range from three to ten acres per well and that if a test hole dries up or a decision is made not to drill the land would be returned to its original state. The service will not issue leases on tracts deemed critical habitat for the grizzly bear or where mineral activity could affect water quality. No exploration is allowed on slopes steeper than fifty percent.

Thoreau water and road upgrade plan approved by county
Gallup McKinley County commissioners endorsed a five point plan to start a 400000 Thoreau water and roads project on October 29. A Gallup prisoner was isolated after attempting self harm Friday afternoon. Other inmates in cell No 4 alerted jailers who found him cutting his arm with a portion of his food tray. He told staff he faced harassment in the cell and warned he would repeat the act if returned there.

First Mine Permit Issued Under New Coal Act Near Grants
S F Coal Corp won the state Mining and Minerals Division’s first permit under the Coal Surface Mining Act for the Lee Ranch Mine in McKinley County about 35 miles north of Grants. The project plans 70 million tons of coal over 26 years, hiring 300 during full production. Construction starts 1982, production by mid 1983, with land restoration and water protection requirements.

Indian Youth Council wins solar grant for workshops
The National Indian Youth Council receives a 9360 grant from the state Energy and Minerals Department to back a Tawa Bahanne Passive Solar Workshop project. It will build two greenhouses and two Trombe walls on four New Mexico reservations including Zuni Pueblo and Beclabito Chapter House. Construction will be by local Indian communities with workshops plus public lectures, then monitor system performance.

Vanderwagen fire project cuts costs approved by county
McKinley County commissioners moved to reduce design costs for a Vanderwagen Volunteer Fire Department fire house by bidding the architectural drawings. Architect Ed Preston said bidding could save 6000 to 7000 dollars with a 90000 dollar state grant funding the project, including 20000 for design. The county awaits Oct 8 state approval and Preston indicated further savings by reusing existing plans.
