GMCS okays sex suit payoff at $110000
The Gallup McKinley County Board of Education agreed to pay 110000 to settle a civil suit involving a former principal and teacher accused of sexually abusing students. The suit, filed by the New Mexico Public Schools Insurance Authority over insurance coverage in the Charles Johnson Leverly case, was settled out of court last July for an undisclosed sum. Board attorney George Kozeliski said the settlement was the last hurdle in the case, which involved ten former students.

Tuba City High chess team wins Region One tourney
Tuba City High School chess team won first place at the Region One team tournament in Winslow. Monument Valley High School of Kayenta finished second, and Kingman High finished third. Seven teams competed. Individual scores: Raven Hudson and Theresa Crank each had two wins. Shaun Tracey two and a half. Jonas Jensen and Heath Hudson three wins. Derrick Crank and Gered Whitehall each had two wins. Adrian Rigge one win. Nathan Hecht, a freshman, one and a half. Next tournament will be Oct. 18–19 at Monument Valley High. Coach Mike Belinte noted the team has three tournament wins this season and praised the younger players’ improvement.
