The EPA proposed reducing nitrogen oxide emissions at the Four Corners Power Plant near Farmington by at least 80 percent. Plant operators would install selective catalytic reduction on all five units, cutting annual NOX from about 45,000 tons to 9,000 tons.
In Albuquerque, two men from Crownpoint face second-degree murder charges after a Sept. 4 homicide near Crownpoint. Calvin Augustine and Byron Pahe, both 20, had charges dismissed by the US Attorney while others, including Wally Vinton, Brian Thompson, and Presley Shorty, remain jailed. A federal grand jury released a separate indictment on Sept. 29.

EPA and Nez Perce community officials updated plans for cleaning radium contaminated soils from two former uranium mines near Northeast Churchrock. Since 2007 actions removed thousands of cubic yards of contaminated soil, and 2009 efforts added about 100000 more. Rio Algoma will repair fences and stabilize waste piles, seal roads, and pursue a five year paving fix while a permanent remedy is studied. A long term option for about 900000 cubic yards remains under EPA review, with a shared meeting held to discuss long term cleanup.
From WINDOW ROCK Navajo Police officer Rory Ateitty assisted by Trevor Howeland and Everett Gilbert chased men loitering near Shiprock Boys and Girls Club. Ateitty drove into a ditch while approaching the others. a suspect lay moaning under his front right tire as medics arrived and the vehicle was towed. The intoxicated man had left packages of leafy substances at the scene.
At the McKinley County Commission meeting on Wednesday the board voted to award a two year plumbing services contract to Dallage Corporation, abstained by Chair Dive Dallago, over Laroc Refrigeration. Jason Corral protested the decision citing abuse of power linked to former officials Dick Dc Heney and Hal Liburton, while noting Laroc Refrigeration’s bid.
Gallup authorities report Ray Bailey 50 of Meritmore arrested after a Love's tanker truck weaved along Interstate 40. A caller warned of the danger around midnight Tuesday. Bailey, charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, was booked at the McKinley County Adult Detention Center and held on a $1,000 bond. This marks his second DWI arrest.
An anonymous tip to the Cibola County Sheriff led to the arrest of Jessé Madrid 41 of 111 Eileen St. for possession of marijuana more than eight ounces. 14 plants were seized from a chicken house in Madrid’s yard. Tony Mace of the CCSO said Madrid is jailed on a fourth degree felony count.
