He cites Public Law 93-584 and asserts Navajos must vacate Hopi land, countering Navajo lobbying and publicity claims. Gallup McKinley County Attorney Forrest Buffington said he will present oral arguments in the New Mexico Supreme Court on a suit seeking to repeal the local option Sunday liquor law. The county is named in a second lawsuit alongside 39 others filed by Mae W. Pruey of Edd's Package Store. The suit contends Sunday prohibition is unconstitutional and an establishment of religion, while Buffington called the religious argument weak and noted some districts permit Sunday sales. He argued due process is not violated and liquor dealers have same rights. No date set for the hearing.
Ganado Arizona Sage Memorial Hospital officials said they plan to replace a 1974 ambulance after about 100,000 miles and $1,400 in recent repairs. The hospital sponsors a November carnival to raise funds with seven area merchants already contributing. A bid process is underway with five manufacturers including Collins Industries Wheeled Coach and Front Line Emergency Vehicles. The new unit would carry four to five patients and arrive by early next year.
Cherokee Nation seeks a federal bill to fund and build a 38 megawatt hydroelectric plant at the W D Mayo Lock and Dam on the Arkansas River. The project would be a joint venture with the U S Army Corps of Engineers, creating about 400 jobs during construction and aiming for commercial operation by 1990 with construction start as early as late 1986.
