Cine Bureau WINDOW ROCK Ariz The House Appropriations Committee approved 35 million in add on requests for the Navajo Tribe with no expected changes before the Interior Department budget bill moves to the full House. The funding request for all Indian programs sits 700 million above the Presidents request, raising vulnerability to Senate cuts before final passage later this month.
The 67th Northern Navajo Fair begins in Shiprock with the theme Healing, The Key to Navajo Unity. The schedule lists exhibit entries, carnival hours, talent contests, livestock and exhibit judging, ceremonies, parades, powwows, old timers rodeo, gourd dances, mud bogs, and final rodeo through October 7.
The Navajo Housing Authority reports a 27.5 million federal grant from HUD to build 318 housing units and install water sewer electrical and road facilities. Gallup police officers from city county and state agencies live in trailers on Gallup-McKinley County school district land near schools. The program started about ten years ago to curb vandalism and break-ins. Officers patrol after hours using on-site housing while the district covers space and utilities. No break-ins have occurred at Jefferson Elementary since Kent McKinney moved in five years ago.
Betty Reid reports in WINDOW ROCK Arizona that tribal court testimony on suspending Navajo Chairman Peter MacDonald and his son describes attempts to land contracts. Witnesses claim no threats occurred though prosecutors allege 45 counts against the elder and 24 against the son for bribery extortion and conspiracy related to reservation business deals.
In Holbrook Arizona the July 30 shooting death of 21 year old George C Tracas during a drug arrest is under debate. Navajo County Attorney Melvin R Bowers Jr ruled the officer used deadly force as justified but suggested suit possibilities remain. The case centers on whether rights were violated and whether a search warrant was issued before the raid.
