HUD expands Navajo home ownership through 184 loan
HUD launches the Indian Home Loan Guarantee Program Section 184 to help mid and upper income Navajo families buy homes on the reservation. Loans are issued by private banks and guaranteed by the federal government. No new Navajo Nation laws are required. Eligibility includes Native Americans within the Navajo Nation who meet credit standards and the Housing Authority.

Foster grandparents honored in Tuba City Arizona
In Tuba City Chapter House Western Navajo Agency Foster Grandparent Program marked its 30th anniversary with a ceremony honoring 32 volunteers. The Navajo Nation program began in 1971 and sees volunteers at schools and in youth programs while promoting cultural identity through language and traditions. Volunteers support AIDS awareness Parents Anonymous Juvenile Services Center and the K E Project and advocate on multiple levels. The coordinators cited recognition and appreciation from the participants.

McDonald’s Hawaii dream comes true at Gallup hotel luau
Jeff McDonald, a 14 year old leukemia patient, had his wish granted as Gallup High Pom Poms staged a Hawaii themed luau at the Best Western Inn. Local dancers learned hula with visiting Hawaiians while eight Gallup High students portrayed warriors. Reba McEntire surprise call followed and townspeople rallied to lift the family spirits.
