Navajo water and sewer upgrades reach 4500 homes
Over two years about 80 million dollars funded by the Indian Health Service has improved water wells lines and sewage facilities for 4500 Navajo homes on the reservation. The Thoreau project serves 32 families with 23000 gallons stored in two tanks and 40000 feet of pipe, funded by multiple sources and overseen by PHS engineers with NECA construction.

Environmental tour surveys Gulf Oil projects in West
A group of environmentalists community leaders and journalists will tour Gulf Oil energy projects in the western United States including two in northwest New Mexico. The tour visits Mt. Taylor uranium mine near Grants and Pittsburg and Midway coal mine north of Gallup with stops at Sandia Labs to view a 1.5 megawatt central receiver solar tower and a 10 megawatt central receiver planned for Barstow California. The group travels to northwest Colorado to inspect an oil shale project near Bangley. Gulf and Standard Oil had considered an open pit approach but now test a modified in situ method. DOE approved a 40 year plan for the property last year. The group also visits DOE Solvent Refined Coal pilot plant near Tacoma and discusses a potential larger plant in Morgantown West Virginia that could produce 30 million barrels per year if successful.

Gallup's second Heritage Day featured a diverse lineup on Hill Street with ethnic booths from German Mexican Portuguese Greek and Slavic groups, music and dance performances, a Tri-Slavic exhibit, and a dramatic karate watermelon bust by Ed Huntsman. United Way co sponsored activities with Ford Canyon Youth Center and Red Cross displaying community work and fund raising.

NFPI celebrated its 20th founding anniversary with 1,200 people at a Navajo Forest Product Industries barbecue. Senator Pete Domenici flew in to pledge federal support for a Navajo high school while Tribal leaders and former Interior Secretary Stewart Udall highlighted NFPI achievements and future challenges. 800 pounds of beef were served along with beans, green chiles and watermelon prepared by Red Lake Chapter residents.

Mary Paulson resigned last week from her post as administrator of McKinley General Hospital a job she had held since August 1977. She cited personal reasons and said her plans are indefinite. Gigi Carricades was named acting administrator by Fred Mondragon of Presbyterian Hospital system. Two other staff members also resigned recently, though names were not disclosed.
