Navajo officer in critical condition from hantavirus
A 36 year old Navajo police officer, based in Crownpoint, is listed in critical condition at an Albuquerque hospital after hantavirus diagnosis. The Crownpoint Police Trailer and a Crownpoint DOC storage facility were shut for rodent droppings inspections. The disease has 49 U s cases since 1993 with 23 deaths. tribal health officials warn residents about spring cleanup risks and advise precautions.

Lottery scholarships assured for next academic year
Zarana Sanghani reports Gallup amid rising costs the New Mexico Lottery Scholarship program is likely to be funded from reserves to cover a shortfall. About 85 UNM Gallup students received aid this spring. 50 percent of net profits fund the program which pays tuition. The lottery expects about 9.925 million in tuition aid plus 639,100 in reserve interest totaling just over 10.56 million, while costs reach 19.25 million, prompting reserve use. The four year expansion increases spending by 7 million this year and expenses are rising about 2 million annually, risking debt by fall 2002 unless state support rises.
