Navajo Code Talker G I Joe figure draws crowds at Wal Mart

Hundreds gathered at a Wal Mart store to buy one of 700 talking Navajo Code Talker action figures priced around 25 dollars. The 12 inch figure in a World War I Marine uniform speaks seven Navajo phrases with English translations. Samuel Billison of the Navajo Code Talkers Association signed dolls as others waited for autographs. The figure, created with Hasbro input, honors the Navajo language used in World War II era signaling.

Milan village clerk suspended amid audit and alleged embezzlement

Milan village clerk Sandra Gonzales was suspended indefinitely without pay as an ongoing audit by Gary Gaylord Inc uncovers alleged missing village funds. The May 15 action by Village Manager David Jiron followed a special board vote with trustees Ortega Mathers and Brumbelow in support. Gonzales, in office 23 years, was not present at the meeting.

Miner rights advocate Hicks dies at 71 in Grants

ALBUQUERQUE AP Hicks of Grants championed federal legislation to compensate uranium workers for illnesses from Cold War mining. He died of cancer at 71 on April 25 at his Grants home. He led New Mexico Uranium Workers and donated his body to science.

WINDOW ROCK The To’Hajilee chapter plans a Las Vegas style casino and destination resort near Albuquerque along I-40 despite opponents using the Navajo criminal code to block discussion. Kraus-Anderson cautions that such facilities rapidly generate income and require expansion, with sites including Sanders and Monument Valley as potential Navajo casinos in Arizona and New Mexico.

Gallup Man Pedals 788 Miles Using Hands

Gallup resident Dayea, paralyzed from the waist down, plans a coast to coast 788 mile relay from Denver to St Louis to promote healthy lifestyles.
