Residents and activists cited in the film The Return of Navajo Boy spurred action at the Skyline Mine on Olato Mesa near Gouldings. EPA Region 9 coordinator Jason Muisante praised local efforts to address radioactive waste piles that posed long term hazards. Local resident Elsie Begay had long pushed to remove a steel cable from her yard amid cleanup work begun after a 2001 EPA demolition effort.

Man charged after high speed chase near Gallup
Derrick Smith 21 of Charebrock and Farmington faced multiple charges after leading Gallup McKinley County law enforcement on a chase along Interstate 40. He allegedly fled an assault scene, rammed a vehicle, and was arrested at the Adult Detention Center. He faced charges including driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene, two counts of aggravated burglary, two counts of failure to maintain control, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, assault on a peace officer, and related offenses. He remained in custody awaiting arraignment and medical treatment.

Kal Pueblo to swear in a new Tribal Council by Tuesday after a six month political dispute. Gierald Hoosee Sr won 819 votes, Mark Martinez 682, and Birde na Sanchez 603 in a Monday general election.
