Gallup McKinley County School District officials confront a seven million budget gap tied to state funding cuts and declining enrollment. Superintendent Ray Arsenault says drastic steps may include shutting a school, unpaid leave for staff, and not extending some contracts. No firm cuts yet as 2011-2012 plans are formed.

The New Mexico Steakhouse Restaurant at the Best Western Inn and Suites in Grants has reopened after a voluntary closure due to an open hole in the kitchen floor with standing raw sewage. The closure came ahead of a Department of Environment health inspection, and the facility has since resumed operations.
Window Rock representatives from the Navajo Nation Supreme Court, district courts, and Special Prosecutor Alan Balaran met at the Navajo Nation Museum to discuss a plan to dismiss criminal cases against Navajo Nation Council delegates and refile as civil actions. The plan, submitted to the Supreme Court in response to Acothley v Perry, seeks civil accountability and restitution rather than criminal penalties, with two Washington civil lawyers willing to volunteer.
Former Zuni Governor Norman Cooeyate and Lt. Gov. Daney Simplicio filed an appeal challenging Chief Judge John Chipela's decision to dismiss the Head Cacique from administering the oath of office. Chapela kept the case moving, citing political parties using religion for agendas.
The Zuni Special Election Board named six candidates for three vacant tribal council seats. The contenders include Eric Bobelu Gerald Howe SryMark Martinez Birdena Sanchez Sheldon Todd Westika and former Lt. Gov. Dancy Simplicio. Absentee ballots can be requested by Monday and must be returned to the Election Office by May 6 at 5 p.m.
