Tribe May Lose Potato Plant If It Does Not Act

Gallup reports the Navajo Nation faces losing the potato processing plant if fast action isn’t taken. The project, led by R D Offutt Cov and Navajo Agricultural Products Industries, could move to Kirtland or Bloomfield without a tribe financial commitment of about 10 million dollars. NAPI officials urge timely council support to keep the plant on the reservation and sustain jobs and tax revenue.

No such thing as a bad kid at Pinon Warrior Academy

In Pinon Arizona Sgt Tyrone Barlow runs the Pinon Warrior Academy for students suspended for threats or drug use. He rejects the idea of bad kids, focusing on behaviors and personal growth. The program blends Navajo heritage with military discipline in a portable classroom atmosphere. Barlow, from Tuba City, previously served as Army NCO Academy assistant commander.

Bail hearing set for teens in bomb case

In Tuba City Navajo Nation district court, 18 year old Stewart Tracy Jr and classmate Roger Hudson face charges of aggravated battery endangering a minor use of explosives and conspiracy related to planting devices at the local high school. Tracy Jr pleaded not guilty at arraignment. Hudson remains in tribal custody pending bail.

Milan police halt escape from private detention center

Two Idaho prisoners, Martin Fernandez and Ben Perez, escaped through a razor wire fence at the Cibola County Corrections Center near Milan New Mexico and were captured minutes later hiding under a trailer on Ambrosia Street. Milan Police chief Alfonso Martinez and Sgt Jerry Stephens arrested them around 2 30 PM after a truck company worker call. The escape, part of a larger Ida ho transfer, prompted a lockdown as authorities investigated outside help and the circumstances.

Senator seeks 761000 for hantavirus education plan

U S Sen Pete Domenici has proposed a 761000 funding request to implement a hantavirus education project in New Mexico and the Navajo Nation. The effort, via the CDC in FY 2001, targets public and professional education to prevent hantavirus pulmonary syndrome amid past NM cases and Navajo Nation involvement.

Students spruce up the neighborhood Arbor Day project in Gallup

Roosevelt Elementary and Red Rock School students, teachers and parents joined City of Gallup workers to plant 25 pine trees on the west soccer field. More than 2,000 gallons of water were used as students learned wind breaking, landscaping and teamwork during the Soccer Field Enhancement Project. Mayor John Bena attended with Red Rock Rockets as part of an environmental study on trees and human benefit.
