Cibola County considers hospital revenue bond plan

County commissioners may vote Monday on a $700,000 hospital revenue bond to finish Cibola General Hospital. The Series 2000 bond would not raise new taxes and matures November 1, 2009. Open date expected in July with construction completion and equipment funding. The agenda also covers acting as fiscal agent for a $150,009 state grant for the Alco Building and a road damage issue.

Prisoners moved to Grants private women’s prison

The New Mexico Corrections Department aims to finish relocating all 456 female inmates from Santa Fe’s Penitentiary to the Nashville based Corrections Corporation of America operated Grants facility by May 8. Over 80 have moved, with 52 remaining, as delays slowed the expansion and cost per inmate is projected at about 43.7 dollars daily.

Mega sculptures by Gallup artist Armando Alvarez

Armando Alvarez, a Gallup resident, creates monumental megasculptures starting with We, the People in Miyamura Park. Watering Place, the Las Cruces piece chosen over 14 entries, uses 80,000 pounds of steel in a 130-foot circular form. The work emphasizes rugged farming life and includes benches and picnics for visiting students at the ranch and farm heritage museum.

Navajo Nation Law and Justice Day for Local Students

Several hundred students from Pine Springs Tse Ho Tso Intermediate Kinlichee Crystal and St Michaels visited the Navajo Nation police station and courthouse for Law and Justice Day. They toured, handled goods from Toys for Tots, met police dogs, and watched a marijuana seizure drill. Navajo President Kelsey Begaye urged students to stay in school while stressing respect for self and others.

Escape at Milan Detention Center Reported Recaptured

A few inmates escaped the Milan Detention Center on Thursday and were recaptured later the same day. Police said information on the escape would be released Monday and the CCA warden was unavailable for comment. The jail is a large facility run by Corrections Corporation of America based in Nashville.

Navajo Nation eyes lifting moratorium on trust funds

Navajo Nation councils consider ending a moratorium on spending from the Navajo Rehabilitation Trust Fund intended to aid displaced Diné. The move, approved by Government Services and Resources committees, heads to the Economic Development Committee for review. The trust has $16 million from 1990 95 plus $4 million in interest, with 28 requests totaling 2.9 million and bids pending. The commission had allocated 250000 to each of its 10 members last summer, a plan the GSC criticized for lacking procedures to prevent political influence.
