Youth given 40 years for Shiprock murder case
Anthony Yazzie, 18, was sentenced to two concurrent 40 year prison terms for the December 11 1996 killings of Gary Wayne Adams and his son Gary Douglas Adams. Yazzie, 14 at the time, was ordered to pay 4480.20 restitution. The Adams were a Mississippi truck driver and son attacked near Shiprock while rest stops.

Cop Struck During Traffic Stop Leads to Chase
Grants Townley, 23, hit Patrol Officer Sylvia Torrez during a routine stop for speeding 45 mph in a 35 mph zone on Santa Fe Avenue. After signing a citation, he threw it and the pen, then sped off, sparking a foot chase toward Milan and a later stop at a Petro Service Station. Police radio alerted, Milan and Cibola deputies pursued.

Navajo voters back reducing council to 24 delegates
In Tuesday’s primary 4 505 votes favored trimming the Navajo Nation Council to 24 delegates from 88. A total of 102 417 voters registered. 20 685 cast ballots. If 51 209 votes are received on August 1 the measure takes effect. Registration opens May 12 and closes July 3. Shiprock chapter currently has three delegates. Tuba City and Coal Mine Mesa share three.
