Return of Navajo Boy told through Cly family history
John Wayne Cly and sister Elsie Mae Cly are central to Nancy Watsons Be Diné Bureau Gallup feature on The Return of Navajo Boy, a documentary tracing how Navajo child John Wayne Cly was taken from Monument Valley by missionaries as a toddler, his life with a foster family, letters from John Wayne and his grandmother, and decades of searching for home. The piece ties the Cly story to uranium mining hearings and Spitz film collaborations, with Ever present Goulding relatives and Ford connections shaping the valley’s photographic legacy.
