Co-op Tackles Social Woes On Thoreau Reservation
Sister Angela Bianco founded The Gathering Place in 1987 to aid Navajo families through a quilting co op and artisan crafts. The center expanded to literacy health and family support programs including prenatal home visits, two literacy centers, and a community newspaper Rainbow Notes. The program promotes a holistic approach integrating health education literacy and economic development and has spread to Smith Lake with First Teachers teaching parents to spend 45 minutes daily reading and playing with their children.

Gallup Edison Eskeets, a native arts teacher in Rowe New Mexico, will undertake a 375 mile 10 day run from Blanca Peak Colorado to his Gallup home to raise scholarship funds for the Native American Preparatory School. The trek echoes a 20 year journey begun at age 16 and aims to support NAPS students facing high costs and dual worlds.

Three Gap residents die in crash near Page Arizona
A snow and rain slicked collision on U S 89 near Page Arizona killed Navajo Reservation residents and a Department of Public Safety officer. Rosita Redhouse 30, her daughter Pearl Redhouse 17, and Rosita Redhouse 38 died. Two children Davin Hanks 2 and Mayta Hanks 1 were flown to Phoenix Children’s Hospital in critical condition. Officer Brett Buckmister, 31, died after colliding with the van. Buckmister was en route to a separate rollover investigation.

Shelly halts jail cost talk at McKinley County meeting
At the McKinley County commissioners session Ben Shelly halted discussion on jail cost reductions saying the talk was not on the agenda. County counsel Doug Decker spoke for absent attorney Steven Seeger while Seeger’s ideas on non jail punishments were cited.
