KGAK listeners raise funds for Hobbs family tragedy

Diné Bureau Gallup NM KGAK radio station collected over $2,000 in food and cash in under three hours after appealing for help for the Hobbs family of Na vajo. Ray Christine and 8 month old Shasawn Hobbs were killed in a car crash Monday after a Brimhall man led police on a high speed chase. The station reported strong community response with cash donations and food, noting this was the first time it dedicated so much air time to aid a single family.

Navajo Preparatory School breaks ground on new campus

Navajo Preparatory School began the first phase of a 4.5 million campus expansion in Farmington on Wednesday. Four new dorms plus a 24,000 square foot gym will accompany renovations to historic buildings. Completion is set for December with a longer term plan totaling about 40 million. The project aims to raise enrollment from 195 to 300 students. The school, founded 1912 to 1935 by the United Methodist Church, notes a legacy of Navajo leaders and scholars.

Thoreau teacher aids storm wrecked St Croix recovery

William Lenzner, a Thoreau Middle School teacher, joined Global Volunteers to assist St Croix residents after last fall’s hurricane. About 20 volunteers helped repair homes, build walls, and improve damaged structures while learning about island life. Lenzner noted residents’ resilience despite lingering destruction and forms required for aid, and described the island’s warm, laid-back culture.

Ramah man killed in rollover on dirt road

A 19 year old Ramah man Leander Pino died at the scene after ejecting from a 1991 Oldsmobile during a rollover on a dirt road in the Jones Ranch area. Police say alcohol was a factor and the driver Loren Singer 19 fled the scene after losing control.

Non-Indian woman faces Hopi ban over tepee on reservation

Ariz Hopi Tribe seeks to expel Aileen Hamilton a non Indian after she erected a tepee and temporary structures at a Navajo and Hopi elders camp on the Hopi Partitioned Lands without written tribal approval. Hamilton testified she aimed to protect elders from extreme heat and wind and argued the tepee is not a permanent structure under Hopi law.
