Begaye Faces Shakeup as Aides Resign in Protest

Navajo Nation President Kelsey Begaye confirmed two top advisers, Larry Foster and Tom Ranger, have resigned for personal reasons. Foster, arrested Jan 12 for driving under the influence, plans to finish projects and transfer duties before leaving March 31, while Ranger shifts duties to new chief of staff Sharon Noel.

Buddhist Monks Lead Native Peace March to New Mexico

A Navajo Nation peace march led by Buddhist monk Yusen Yamato travels from San Francisco to Gallup and beyond. The group seeks UN understanding of harm to indigenous people and Mother Earth from mining and other activities. They plan visits to Gallup High School, Kennedy Middle School, Santa Fe, Taos for Earth Day, aiming to reach New York City by October.

Navajo council pay change fails to win chapter support

WINDOW ROCK Navajo delegates fail to secure two thirds support needed to alter tribal law on salaries. Final tallies show 23 chapters opposed, 17 in favor and four with invalid resolutions, far short of the 74 needed for approval. Some chapters had already rejected or delayed action. the effort would have removed the ratification requirement for salary increases.

Vets push to place veterans office under Navajo president

Navajo veterans urge shifting Veterans programs from the Division of Human Resources to a program within the Navajo president s office. They seek closer oversight to secure home loans health care and other benefits. Chet Clah says money arrives for vets but is diverted by the council. Peter MacDonald former chairman promised homes but veterans still wait. Clah Jake Singer and Lester Henry will present the plan to President Kelsey Begaye at the Fourth Annual Memorial Day Walk from April 29 Fort Defiance to May 18 Window Rock May 4.

Growth spurt tightens UNM Gallup budget

UNM Gallup faces a tighter three year budget as unexpected costs for new buildings rise near nine million dollars. Bond funded projects include a new Zuni building and additions to two Gallup campus buildings plus renovations. Overruns come from the Calvin Science building and library projects. Construction bids on Zuni Education Building exceeded estimates by eight hundred thousand dollars.
