Republicans push for a 10 percent surtax extension through Dec 31 and 5 percent through June 30 1970 to curb inflation while many Democrats oppose long renewals without tax reform. Passage could raise about 7.64 billion in the first year and help a 6.3 billion unified budget surplus, but Senate Democrats seek meaningful changes.
Hundreds attend banquet at El Rancho Hotel Gallup to honor Leslie J. Holmes retiring general manager of Navajo Forest Products Industries. Holmes led the move from Sawmill Arizona to Navajo New Mexico and oversaw construction of the new plant. John W. Snyder to take over management of the 550 employee enterprise.
Reies Lopez Tijerina is moved to Albuquerque for a preliminary hearing on a charge of assaulting a federal officer during a June 8 incident at the Santa Fe National Forest. He was returned from a La Tuna reformatory after a June 11 appearance tied to a $2,000 appeal bond revocation following protests by the Alianza land grant group. Forest Service agent James Evans had arrested Tijerina after two signs were burned near Coyote, at the forest boundary.
A two car collision 4.3 miles north of Gallup on U S 666 at 3 20 p m Saturday injured four people. Junior Williamson 42 and Gladys Williamson 40 along with Joel Williamson 7 and Shirley Ann Begay 18 all of American Forks Utah. Jimmy Owens 29 of Cross Canyon Ariz was uninjured. Owens was charged with passing on a yellow line. The injured were taken to St Marys Hospital where the Williamsons were in good condition Joe Williamson and Miss Begay released with minor injuries. Officers Tim Crawford and Larry Allen investigated.
Seven battalion push by fresh South Vietnamese troops around Ben Het Camp in the Central Highlands followed a 20 day sweep that left 244 North Vietnamese dead. The operation began June 8 and extended over the weekend with 21 South Vietnamese soldiers killed and 107 wounded. North Vietnamese harassment eased as U S officers estimated 1,000 to 3,000 enemy around Ben Het pulled back.
In Buenos Aires protests erupt as Rockefeller arrives. Police use tear gas amid anti Rockefeller demonstrations while a communist leader Jauregui is killed. After the stop, Rockefeller heads to Bahia Blanca container tanks catch fire before his departure toward Guyana and Barbados.
Senator Richard B. Russell backs the Safeguard ABM program and MIRV plans, saying critics who fear Soviet talks would halt if deployed are fantastic. He notes the Soviet Union has pursued its own MIRV and ABM development despite treaty talks. Senator John Stennis adds no serious move to remove MIRV from the defense bill.
Bonny the space monkey 200 miles above Earth reports eating food pellets water and cycles while in weightlessness. Spokesmen say the Thailand monkey will remain in orbit for 30 days as implanted sensors monitor brain and heart to guide medical guidelines for longer space missions.
In Caernarvon and Cardiff Welsh authorities mobilized police reserves after a time bomb exploded at the Cardiff post office injuring no one. Police blamed Welsh nationalist extremists and warned of large security deployments for Prince Charles investiture events and Tricia Nixon’s visit.
In a former gold rush town ME Alaska, a fever grips youths as they raid Front Street to uncover coins hidden under the torn wooden boardwalk. The makeshift investigation follows last week’s removal of the boards to reveal a ground rich with nickels dimes quarters and even a half dollar.
