Navajo Headstart director Paul Platero, removed June 18, said Sunday he will fight to regain his job and restore his reputation. He filed a grievance with the tribe’s personnel office, blaming internal conflicts tied to his plan to reorganize the program by shifting positions from the central office to agencies and schools.
Ronald LeBoeuf a Metro Dispatch supervisor from Zuni faces district court after allegedly chasing his estranged wife Jessie LeBoeuf and her mother for about 20 miles after she left Zuni Tribal Courts on Highway 32 police said the wife was shaken and treated for a bruised hip and sprained neck. LeBoeuf remained at the scene but was not arrested.
Navajo coalition members traveled to Washington to back changes to the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act. They seek higher compensation and eligibility for about 17,000 Navajo individuals and survivors, with a proposed increase to 125000 to 150000 and removal of the Navajo Reservation boundary as the eligibility line. They note downwinders from Nevada tests are covered but Navajo downwinders are not.
Crime prevention in Window Rock grows with 77 initiatives led by the police department. The Community Oriented Policing Program COPP launched in April combines police, citizens and local business owners to curb gang activity graffiti and curfew violations. Funds come from Mustang Speedy and Giant stores. The Pigeon Springs Project adds a neighborhood watch in Rio Puerco area to reduce curfew violations drinking speeding and gang activity. Officers will increase time in the neighborhood and lighting will be added to deter crime.
Gallup Na nizh hoozhi Center Inc releases a study on Ocean drinkers who mix hair spray or other alcohol based household compounds with water. It finds Ocean use tied to a lower social class, higher addiction, and blackout intoxication linked to crime and hospitalizations. The report groups users into experimental, maintenance, and chronic, with about ten percent being experimental.
