Dredging Halted Over Small Flood Gates in Gallup

Gallup city workers paused Rio Puerco flood control dredging after tests showed two 42 inch flood gate pipes between the main river and the Little Puerco are too small to handle a 100 year flood. City planner John Milligan said gates would close when the main river runs and open for Little Puerco, but the pipes risk backing up water into downtown and near Gallup Sand and Gravel Co. and the electrical substation. The contractor halted work June 26 as the corps of engineers seeks an alternative design with the city covering 25 percent of costs and most in–kind labor.

City buys 60 acres west of Munoz Overpass for flood plan

Milligan cites two options to fix small pipes. One is larger pipes but risk of uncontrollable flows. The other is a 1963 proposal to build a dam at the Little Puerco south end near Apache Circle to catch big flows and reduce downtown water, making 42 inch pipes potentially sufficient. The land is from Gamerco Associates for flood control.
