Kaibeto youth urged to care for body like new vehicle

Navajo Tribal Council Speaker Kelsey Begaye delivered the keynote at Kaibeto's first Youth and Family Unity Conference urging youth to avoid alcohol and drugs and to treat their bodies as irreplaceable. The day featured discussions on parenting, domestic violence, gangs, and substance abuse with about 175 attendees from Kaibeto, Navajo Mountain, Tuba City, and Inscription House.

Judge Allows Evidence From Warrantsless Search

In Gallup a judge ruled that investigators may introduce evidence gathered without a search warrant, despite defense claims of rights violations. Randall Roberts argued that items seized before a warrant was issued should not reach the jury in the racketeering and stolen property case against Vincent Lopez Sr. and related charges. The trial included a Monday morning jury selection after hearings on suppression and witness testimony about the July 8, 1993, arrests at the Lopez home.

Two names added to abuse suit in Gallup case

The amended federal suit against Gallup McKinley Schools adds Robert Chris Archuleta and Joe Allen Woods as plaintiffs. The five former male students allege abuse by Charles E. Johnson and Theodore M. Leyerly at Zuni and Gallup High School in the 1970s and 1980s.
