The Gallup City Council tabled for one month the move to incorporate Gamerco, awaiting study. The 5-0 vote followed a work session where officials said the issue was too complex for an immediate decision. Council will meet with McKinley County commissioners and Gamerco owners before resuming talks.
The council unanimously confirmed Mayor Wayne Lewis’s picks to three local boards including Rose Ethertor Dock Livingston and Charles High. Colaianni Pena were reappointed to MACOG. Livingston and Salazar fill vacated seats. An extension of sewer service to Wyatt Dee Ann Street area, higher impoundment fees, park beautification contracts, and a $50k tree planting grant were approved. Eagle Oil and Allen Oil won bids for fuel and lubricants.
BLM reports 64 percent of 28 comments favor wilderness designation for El Malpais lava flows near Grants. Nine letters oppose citing mineral potential and private or tribal claims while others praise natural resources, geological and educational values. Draft EIS underway with final president’s recommendation by 1980.
Seven Gallup Catholic representatives will join bishops from five Southwest dioceses for a July 2 meeting at Holy Cross Retreat in Mesilla Park from 11 a.m. to 3 30 p.m. to discuss alternative boundary redraws that could create a Flagstaff Arizona diocese and adjust lines toward state borders. Attending Gallup delegation are Bishop Hastrich Very Rev Alfred Tachias Very Rev Leo Gomez Sister Conradine Juan Chavez Very Rev Kenneth Robertson and Holbrook City Councilwoman Libby Budenholzer.
