Kathy Heims reports the Shiprock Navajo Fair, the Nation’s oldest, is not sanctioned by the Navajo Nation and the Shiprock Fair Board Inc. lacks a permit to operate at the fairgrounds. The Economic Development Committee voted to withdraw acres for commercial development, shifting land to McDonald’s and a Laundromat, while a proposed 200-acre site near Navajo was set aside but stalled by cactus and regulatory wrangles. The family of the late Jimmy Bob Lee says they hold the land use permit and seek due process as the fair grows into a multimillion dollar event with no compensation to landowners.
