By Cathy L Smith Gallup This past school year marked the first time courses in the University of New Mexico Gallup Rural Tribal Enterprise Program were offered and its director Cal Secina calls it a success. The two year associate of applied science degree will graduate its first class next May. The program, funded by the Legislature, needs more money but is seen as a forward funded pioneer at UNM. It originated at Navajo and Zuni tribal officials urging training for chapter managers and potential tribal entrepreneurs. Dr John Phillips notes it is the only new program at the university and the only one forward funded by the state Legislature. He adds credit transfer problems due to the program's uniqueness. few colleges offer a similar course in the region. About 70 students enrolled this year.
Former Navajo Tribal Chairman Peter MacDonald says he has not received formal notice of decertification as a candidate for this year’s tribal chairman election. He spoke after the Board of Election Supervisors ruled five candidates ineligible, citing residency rules and prior office experience, amid claims of a smokescreen to block his campaign.
Milan area report shows Kerry Hassell perched on a cross six miles north of Milan to protest alleged air land and water contamination from the Homestake Uranium Mining Co tailings pond located about a half mile beyond State Highway 53. Hassell and his father-in-law Fred Holley claim prevailing winds carry toxic gases onto Holley’s eight acre plot housing a scrap yard and Hassell family trailer. Hassell vows to stay put from dawn to after dark daily until action is taken.
