Two Local Soldiers Die in Vietnam Conflicts
Army Captain Jerry D. Abeyta of Gallup and Army Specialist 4 Lawrence A Shaffer of Albuquerque were reported killed in Vietnam. Abeyta joined June 6 1967 and served with the 21st Infantry Division after April deployment. He was 21 and a Gallup High School graduate awaiting homecoming with his family. Shaffer, a Manzano High School alumnus, enlisted September 1967 and died when his vehicle overturned at a construction site.

Santa Fe Delays Four Trains After Bridge Fire
A bridge north of U.S. 66 on the west I 40 interchange burned, delaying four Santa Fe trains for about three hours. The San Francisco Chief and the Grand Canyon, two eastbound passenger trains, plus two westbound freights were held up as Gallup firefighters soaked the timbers from the top down. No damage figures were given, and the cause remained undetermined.
