Gallup police report another drunken pedestrian fatality on Interstate 40 near milepost 22. Andrew Long, 27, of Rehobeth, stepped into westbound traffic and was struck by Franklin Atcitty, 61, of Shiprock. Atcitty swerved in an failed effort to avoid collision. Long died at 7:32 p.m. Alcohol odor noted, no charges filed after field sobriety test. Atcitty shaken and later tested.
Grassroots bootlegging groups from Chinle and Tuba City traveled to Window Rock for a meeting with the Navajo Bootlegging Task Force. The session was canceled for lack of a quorum as only one appointed member attended, drawing criticism from local leaders who urged action. Bruce Draper called alcoholism the most preventable lethal disease, urging immediate steps. A youth risk survey from Chinle schools was also read into the record.
WINDOW ROCK At least one former Navajo Nation leader questions the president's office decision to give up police protection for high ranking tribal officials. Peterson Zah notes he valued security while in office and warns of potential danger, as Begaye relinquished protection after federal funds for security were refused. He says staff will accompany Begaye in lieu of formal police protection.
Diné College President Tom Lewis says Navajo Nation budget plans to reduce college funding from $2 million to $962,240 next year are extreme and unfair. Officials warn that such cuts could eliminate programs and trigger staff layoffs, while lawmakers seek an $8–9 million overall reduction with safeguards for jobs. Arizona figures note a $17.25 million state grant for facilities, but cannot fund maintenance. Senator Jack Jackson warns cuts could jeopardize future state support.
Native Day events drew attendees and highlighted cultural activities coordinated by local groups. Participants shared performances, crafts, and food, showcasing community pride and collaboration across organizations.
The 11th annual Native American Appreciation Day in Gallup on June 5 drew about 15,000 attendees with 8,000 served at Red Rock State Park barbecue. The event, co sponsored by the Gallup Chamber of Commerce and the city, featured a song and dance ceremony and a free Rick Trevino concert, while volunteers tallied 2,000 pounds of smoked meat.
