Test firings at Fort Wingate to evacuate 200 area residents
Nearly 200 service personnel will be in the area Tuesday for 0 test firings of Pershing missiles at Fort Wingate Army Depot. Jim Lovelady of White Sands Proving Ground says evacuation costs total 15000 dollars, mostly to relocate families. First firing is at a.m. open to the public. second at 7:30 p.m. Viewers must stay 9000 feet from the launch site with buses transporting to an elevated viewing station. Over 500 residents will be evacuated starting 2 a.m. Tuesday. roadblocks will be in place before each firing at Ramah and I-25. The luncheon featured Lovelady and five others. White Sands was chosen for isolation and good weather. The missiles may carry nuclear warheads and will be loaded with dead warheads for tests. no deaths or major property damage in 30 years.
