Pine Springs pay dispute ends year-round schooling

A pay dispute between the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the teachers union appears to have ended the Pine Springs School year-round plan in Arizona north of Houck. The move to a three weeks on and one week off schedule for about 103 pupils faced payroll adjustments for six teachers, after initial approval in 1994.

Tuba City and Crownpoint seek grant for schools

Tuba City Unified School District 15 applies for 555000 Kellogg Foundation seed money to study a technology center. Crownpoint Institute of Technology plans western reservation expansion pending feasibility study results and local support. Both communities aim to improve regional education opportunities.

Zuni Recycling Center Operated by ZEE in Blackrock

Zuni Entrepreneurial Enterprises runs a unique operation as the country’s only Native American recycling center. The program partners with a rehabilitation center whose clients perform most tasks from pickup to packing. ZEE began in 1987 as a community dream evolving from a cable company venture into recycling in 1989. It is grant-supported with aims to become self-sustaining, upgrading crushing equipment. The center recycles over seven tons monthly, including office and computer paper, newspaper, aluminum and steel cans, and plastics. Erwin Toabetsaye enjoys greeting customers and guiding them through the center in his wheelchair.

Gallup petition drives vote on Sunday liquor sales

A petition drive in Gallup seeks at least 383 valid signatures to force a local option vote on whether Sunday sales of alcoholic beverages in unbroken packages for off premises consumption should be allowed. City officials note signatures must be verified, and if enough are gathered a Tuesday referendum could occur after July 1.

Gallup Fire Officials Urge Safe Fourth of July Boom Plans

Gallup Fire Department officials promote a community fireworks event on July 3 and 4 at the Sports Complex. A professional display is planned for July 4 with free admission, live entertainment, and a raffle. Sparklers allowed only if not tossed, pets should stay home, and fireworks must rise higher than 12 feet according to city rules. Local residents are urged to enjoy the safe, town-sponsored celebration rather than setting off private fireworks. For details, call Robert Rodriguez or Raymond Ross before June 29.
