Peter MacDonald and Larry Manuelito were declared ineligible to run for Navajo Tribal chairman by the Election Board for residency on the reservation and for owing money to a tribal enterprise. They may appeal to the Navajo Supreme Court within ten days. Also disqualified were Kay Bennett Cecil Largo Collier Greyhat for not meeting the tribal work requirement. Seven candidates remain eligible for the Aug 12 primary.
Ross Swimmer, assistant secretary for the BIA, said figures claiming 15,000 Navajos and Hopis live on Big Mountain are outright lies. BIA data show 1,215 Navajos about 250 families awaiting relocation, with all Hopis relocated from Navajo partition lands. He noted Navajos on Hopi partition lands face harsh limits and many want relocation benefits. Swimmer outlined plans for two years of the federal Navajo Hopi relocation program and met with local officials and advocates.
Gallup area programs like Friendship Services and Thoreau Alcoholism Program face cuts in the coming fiscal year. Four Friendship Services staffers will lose jobs amid an $80,000 1986 87 cut, raising workload for counselors. Thoreau faces a 6.1 percent revenue slash limiting outreach and home visits though staff remain committed. Statewide cuts affect all community based programs.
The Navajo Tribal Council approved a 32.5 million dollar government settlement to resolve three federal claims, adding 33.8 million to 1986 income and bringing total tribal income to 206.7 million. Opposition argued for local consultation before approval and fear of losing interest if delayed.
McKinley County upgrades courthouse grounds with paving 17000 from federal revenue sharing for next year. Work includes west parking lot paving, sidewalk repairs, landscaping, and exterior patching. Plans maintain historic look while adding a wall for security and a facelift under downtown development input.
