Four killed in weekend New Mexico traffic crashes

Four people died in separate weekend crashes across the Gallup area and nearby Utah routes. Wayne Laman of Shiprock died in a two mile east of Montezuma Creek single vehicle crash the 17 year old injured. In Gallup Walter J Carr 43 died when his car left US 66 near Patton Avenue. An unidentified pedestrian was killed on US 66 near Mine Run Road. Millard R Hewey 24 of Shonto was fatally struck while crossing US 66 east of Gallup. Police investigations continued into each incident.

NCC delays staff cut decision in Flagstaff review

Navajo Community College board postponed final choices on reducing staff after an executive session. The plan faces possible program eliminations in nursing veterinary and animal science mass communications and dormitory and secretarial staff. Final action and budget reviews set for a Flagstaff meeting.

Navajo CC adopts four day week to save money

Navajo Community College in Tsaile and Shiprock switches to a four day work week with 10 hour days from Monday through Thursday to cut costs on utilities and maintenance. The change affects most staff and faculty with few exemptions and aims to improve concentration and efficiency. Separately NCC officials report a grant adjustment for the Navajo Nation Network telecommunication project, noting initial grant notices were lower than expected.

Elderly Tour Navajo Nation On Discount Program

More than 40 seniors from across the United States joined Navajo hosts for a five day visit to Navajo Community College and Canyon de Chelly in Tsaile Arizona. The Elder Hostel Program guided by Jim Mischke of Cortez Colorado offered trips at reduced rates for people over 60. Visitors from Missouri New York North Carolina and other states met Navajo hosts attended language culture and history classes and toured local sites including a canyon visit and Navajo taco dinner at John Brown Sr.s residence. Participants praised learning directly from Navajo people and thanked hosts with gifts of fabric and flour.

Looting of Indian Artifacts Slows in Southern Utah

Officials report tighter surveillance and greater public awareness cutting looting in San Juan County Utah where more than 100 cases were logged last year and damage exceeded 1 million dollars. Sheriff Rigby Wright credits heavy publicity with deterring activity while U S Forest Service agent Mac Thomson notes only a few fresh digs appeared since early spring before two weeks ago.

Gallup Prepares for 1985 Great American Race Visit

Gallup gears up for the 1985 Great American Race as 100 plus vintage cars pause in town for a 1 p.m. lunch at Harold Runnels Park with an expected 3 p.m. finish. Organizers, including Judi Snow, plan traffic controls from noon to 3:30 p.m. and promise a local flavor with Navajo food and entertainers.
