Termination of Navajo DEMS Operations Manager Kenneth Shirley
Kenneth Shirley, operations manager for the Navajo Nation's Department of Emergency Medical Services, was terminated earlier this week. DEMS Director Henry Wallace referred questions to Tom Christy of the Nations Justice Department, which will represent DEMS in any action by Shirley. Christy declined further detail citing confidentiality and Shirley's grievance right. Shirley had four prior DWI convictions from incidents while a Navajo Police lieutenant. The Nation's Independence series previously linked to Melvin Young's 1994 termination.

NM law loopholes tallied in child abuse cases
Gallup NM prosecutors note 1987 law tolls the statute until the child turns 18 or reports abuse. Pre 1987 charges could be filed within 15 years of the incident, but modern application depends on timing and notification. Victims like Phil Ashley and Titus Lee Houston seek justice, while the DA weighs old versus new statutes in Johnson case.
