Yesterday's high was 91 degrees recorded at 3 p.m. The low reached 55 degrees at 4 15 a.m. These readings were recorded at the Gallup independent office located at 500 N Ninth St.
The sexual assault trial of Senator Francisco Gonzales is near its conclusion as testimony continues. Gonzales testified Wednesday and expressed remorse for the incident at the heart of the rape charges. See page 8.
At least 13 people are hurt in a deadly incident described as gunmen in disguise attacking outdoor cafes. Four U.S. Marines are among the injured, with automatic public safety items reported during the exchange. Fire and emergency responders rushed to the scene.
A shortage of bilingual teachers has made them a salable commodity. Arizona school districts may need to recruit Spanish speaking teachers from outside the state to meet new regulations. See page 12.

New Mexicans will have four public meetings next week to comment on a 2.9 million acre land exchange proposed by the U S Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. Meetings are in Albuquerque Monday and Roswell Tuesday with 1 and 7 p m sessions. Oral and written remarks will be accepted.

In Sierra County, a psychologist and a psychiatrist testified that former To Hatchi High principal C C Chick Fero did not premeditate the murder of Gallup McKinley County School Superintendent Paul Hanson due to mental illness. Defense contends Fero was in a mental crisis, acting without faculties, and not intent on killing Hanson, but rather planning death by his own action if fired.
A 22 acre Shiprock shopping center groundbreaking is set for June 29 at the Shiprock Fairgrounds. Navajo Division of Economic Development director Mike Allison says the project costs 4.3 million with future expansion to 7 million. City Market Inc. and Yellow Front will anchor, eight small businesses may fill remaining space. Construction to begin in July and finish by May 1986, with bids June 25.
Gallup McKinley County Chamber of Commerce launches summer program at Red Rock State Park with nightly 8 and 9 15 p m performances by Zuni Laguna and Navajo groups. Admission 1, opening night free. Craft sales, park museum open. Center aids tourism along I 40. plans for permanent facility and future state support.
McKinley County removes names of those who did not vote in the 1984 general election. Of 34 precincts 3,291 voters were purged, leaving 16,407 registered. Democrats outnumber Republicans 12,407 to 3,513. Purge affects 2,346 Democrats, 598 Republicans, 20 minor party and 145 undeclared. Voters must re-register at least 42 days before the next general election. Elections director Marquez says purge reduces illegal voting and plans door-to-door registration drives to boost turnout, aiming for about 20,000 registered by 1986. The bureau will also oversee the county school board election after a state law change.
