Rep. E S Johnny Walker will close his Albuquerque office and open a Gallup field office influenced by Independent Publisher John Zollinger. Joseph Yazzie of Chinle Arizona reported a robbery and injury after four men attacked him in an alley near Fifth and Coal. A 17 year old in Juarez is held without charge after police say a letter mentioning the assassination of Robert F Kennedy fell from his pocket. He was examined by three psychiatrists and may face charges after a review by Mexican authorities. The youth claimed U S and Mexican citizenship and was deported from El Paso after a Los Angeles vagrancy arrest.
Henry Mathews, former Santa Fe New Mexican editor, says he is seeking the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor in the August 27 primary. He now works in public relations in Santa Fe and has funds lined up, awaiting his doctor’s approval to run statewide.
The Navajo Centennial Committee blasts the New Mexico Development Department for little help promoting a June 30 reenactment of the 1868 treaty signing at Fort Sumner, with plans for a long-distance tour through the state including parades and camps ending July 4 in Gallup.
The ERA projects 700 new jobs from the ceremonial park expansion with about 75 percent likely to go to Indians. First 12 years foresee $36 million in visitor spending and $34.5 million off site in Gallup, plus $180 million indirect regional impact and $340 million total state impact. Federal official Dick Sullivan said the missing Bureau of Indian Affairs pilot William Gruger was found in wreckage near a tree after a storm flight from Socorro to Zuni. Papers on the body confirmed Gruger as the pilot. a $500 reward had been offered.

President Johnson’s 100 percent income tax surcharge appears to have a safe margin for passage as the House prepares a vote after a year of controversy. The Senate scheduled its own vote Friday expecting House approval. If enacted, all workers currently having federal income tax withheld will see about a 10 percent increase in withholding in three weeks, with a $6 billion federal spending cut tied to the fiscal year starting July 1. Johnson resisted the spending cut but finally agreed to the measure.
