Walker Plans Gallup Office in First Congressional Field Presence

Congressman E S Johnny Walker announced plans to open a Gallup office and close the Albuquerque office. The move, pending after July 1, makes Gallup the first city in the district with a congressional field office and is to be supported by the General Services Administration. Ernie Garcia was named to run the Gallup office. Harold Runnels will seek the Democratic nomination for U S Representative in New Mexico's second district.

TED RUSHTON Staff Writer reports a special meeting to explain a expanded Ceremonial concept. Allan Rollie says HUD is interested in supporting land and utilities with 40 year financing while David Wesley presents feasibility for year round operation and Red Rocks relocation near Gallup. Washington AP reports the Taos Indians near reclaiming 48000 acres of federal land near Blue Lake in a wilderness area. House passes a bill granting title while 130000 acres may belong to the tribe since 1906 without compensation.

Gallup Officials OK 50 Year Hospital Lease

Gallup officials approve a 50 year lease involving the city, county and Sisters of St. Francis of Seraph for hospital care of indigent patients if funds are available. The council expects later determinations of indigency and cost sharing as they arise. Also approved were library expansion payments and a delegation of authority for out of state travel.

Woman Says She'll Leave Trading Post

Mrs. Arlene Davin, operator of the Buffalo Springs Trading Post, agrees to vacate by July 4 after pressure from Navajo official Nelson Damon who owns the post and refuses a lease renewal. Davin, 60, widow, has run the shop since 1960 and declined a $1,000 settlement.

Centennial Boosts Navajo 100th Anniversary Observance

Miss Indian America Sarah Johnson of Chinle and Miss Navajo Thelma Pablo of Crownpoint helped promote the Navajos 100th anniversary of a peace treaty with the U.S. government at the National Jaycee Convention parade. They displayed exhibits and demonstrated basket weaving rug weaving and sand painting at a Pow Wow for about 15 000 delegates. Johnson will be honored as Sarah Johnson Day in Winslow before traveling to Brussels for a U S Embassy Discover America exhibit.

Council Studies Mobile Home Public Housing Plan

Gallup council reviews a proposal for 80 to 150 mobile home units to help qualified residents. Dean Middleton of the Gallup Public Housing Authority warns two years needed for standard public housing and 340 applications on file. The plan could delay existing 80 units by about four months but offer immediate housing this year to those eligible.

Wreck Injures Rita James and Barbara Daniels on U S 66

Rita James, 15, of Church Rock, is listed in unsatisfactory condition at PHS Hospital after a 7 03 p m crash just east of the vest fy on U S 66. Barbara Daniels, 34, Twin Lakes, was treated and released. Patrolman John Torres says the James pickup left turned into a truck driven by Richard Martinez, 27, of 501 W Mesa. Martinez was unharmed.

City approves jail contract with six percent fee plan

Mil lington and Lugton Architects, Inc. contract for the new jail facility was approved by the city council with changes. The fee would be six percent of construction cost plus contingencies, limited by an undisclosed total, and city control over expenditures is sought. A separate motion aimed to cancel a $16 104 El Paso Pipe and Supply contract due to pipe specification issues.

Patricia Vice of Ganado Arizona told the Independent on Tuesday she was injured in a two vehicle crash Sunday at the Navajo Inn not in the parking lot of a bar on State Road 264. She said she had just left the grocery section of the inn when the accident occurred.

Gallup as Indian locale chosen for ERA site plan

The ERA study endorses Gallup New Mexico as the setting for a year round Ceremonial and related attractions. It highlights Red Rocks canyon, traffic draw, and estimates a 1.48 million dollar first phase with a 225000 dollar 10000 seat grandstand. The plan includes multiple Indian villages and an outdoor drama, built with volunteer tribal labor.

Defense for Airman Terence Toomey plans two witnesses to argue peaceful dissent justifies military participation.
