The New Mexico Press Association chose Gallup for its winter convention after 18 months of planning. Highlights include Los Alamos tours, remarks by George Carmack of the Albuquerque Tribune, and a push to sell the state to locals and visitors.
The New Mexico Army National Guard completes a two week summer training course at Ft Bliss this week with more than 3100 Guardsmen involved.
An eight week NDEA institute starts at John F. Kennedy Junior High School in Gallup to train teachers in high Navajo enrollment districts. Fifty four principals supervisors and master teachers from New Mexico Arizona Colorado and Utah participate with TESL Navajo culture and media instruction led by University of California staff.
Gallup police report 19 year old Jerry Hart was arrested after entering Gallup Surplus store at East Y. A broken window and Hart’s possession of a store watch tied him to the crime. Weekend incidents include a home burglary attempt on Navajo at 310 S Navajo, an assault and robbery near downtown bus depot, and a stolen car recovered near Fort Defiance with two flat tires.
Gallup firefighters on their only weekend run attended a burning telephone pole west of the Allison crossing at 1 p.m. Saturday. No damage occurred and the cause of the blaze is unknown.
Grants resident Oakie Whitley aged 52 died after a June 12 head-on crash on State Road 56 six and a half miles north of Thoreau. The other driver, Marshal Begay of Window Rock Arizona, 29, faced driving on the wrong side charges and was hospitalized. Two Whitley passengers Reyes Chavis and Ray Mirabel were treated for minor injuries.
About 40 miles east of Saigon a U S armored cavalry battalion repelled a Viet Cong assault after midnight as 500 guerrillas attacked with recoilless rifles and machine guns. In the one hour battle 45 guerrillas died, 8 Americans were killed and 31 wounded. The Americans later counted 18 prisoners and 18 weapons. Air and artillery support aided the defense with 175 mm cannons and helicopter gunships.
Leo Carrillo died Friday in Veterans Hospital Albuquerque age 63. Rosary tonight at Rollie Mortuary followed by mass Tuesday at St Francis Church and burial at Hillcrest Cemetery. Survived by two sons Gregorio and Chris, a daughter, a sister group, and two grandchildren.
Soviet Premier Kosygin accused the United States of instigating Middle East crisis in a General Assembly speech and warned the area could trigger a nuclear war. President Johnson urged a negotiated settlement and the withdrawal of troops from occupied territories.
Services are pending at Rol He Mortuary for Frank X Doiron Sr age 63 a Gallup resident who died Saturday in Houston Texas He was a World War II veteran having served in the New Mexico National Guard the 200th Coastal Artillery Battalion D and briefly with the U S Navy He was a member of Knights of Columbus the Third Order of St Francis and Sacred Heart Cathedral He worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Public Health Service He is survived by his wife Mary Doiron two sons James A Doiron and Frank Doiron Jr three sisters Sister Mary Marilyn Sister Mary Mark and Marilyn Scott and ten grandchildren Pallbearers are Robert Menapace John Hren Tom Shibata Guise Bodo Robert Frost Mike Mataya Jim Dow and Dr Vincent Atcardi
President Johnson said troops must be withdrawn from conquered territory in the wartorn Middle East, but only as part of negotiations toward a general Arab-Israeli peace. He tied the pull back to rights of national life for refugees, free maritime passage, recognition of Israel, and arms race limits.
Charles F. Kettel Sr. 80, of Gallup died Saturday at St Marys Hospital Mass. Services Tuesday at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Cathedral with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery Elks plot. Survived by wife Elizabeth, daughter Mrs. Margaret Wells, two sons Fern and Dr Charles Kettel Jr., a brother Fern Kettel, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Pallbearers named William Alexander Tom Dooley Martin Lopez Bill Petranovich John Pena Manuel Gonzales.
New Mexico Press Association members vote to convene the annual winter meeting in Gallup hosted by John K. Zollinger of the Gallup Independent. Over 200 newsmen and wives expected for a two day event with officer elections and writing awards.
