Virginia Goodrich told the McKinley County Commission that if the hospital sticks with its budget it would be $247,000 in the red due to higher medical supplies and malpractice costs. Officials warned the capital equipment list is long and expensive while a mill levy reinstatement could cover the shortfall. The hospital seeks matching funds of 70,525 for energy conservation upgrades and renovations costing over 230,000.
The Associated Press reports President Reagan plans to replace Chief Justice Warren E. Burger who retires after this term with the court's most conservative member and add an arch conservative. Justice William Rehnquist is slated for promotion to chief, with Antonin Scalia expected to fill the vacancy if confirmed. Senate action is anticipated swiftly, despite Democratic opposition.
