No 1985 funds for Navajo housing programs

WINDOW ROCK Ariz The Navajo Housing Authority learned that the Navajo Tribe will not receive any federal money in 1985 to build new houses Region 9 HUD notified tribes in the Southwest of zero allocations Bruce Charley acting co director said the tribe has 1 377 houses in the pipeline and had asked HUD for over 1 400 units in 1985 The decision may be final by June 28 with little chance of change and the tribe can appeal within about two weeks Region 9 says the 15 part evaluation used Washington DC based Office of Indian Housing to judge allocations

Testimony begins in Fero murder trial in New Mexico

Unidentified Victims Among Fatal Crash West of Gallup

Three young men died when their car spun off State Road 118 near Lupton between Gallup and the New Mexico line. Police say the driver and two others were dead by the time the vehicle settled after an 85-foot fall. identities remained withheld pending kin notification.

Gallup-McKinley board OKs single member district plan

Gallup-McKinley County Board of Education approved a move from at large to five single member districts for county elections including the school board. Districts cover Tohatchi Navajo area Church Rock Wingate Fort Wingate Gamerco Bread Springs Cousins Ramah West Gallup Manculito East Gallup Crownpoint Thoreau Whitehorse Prewitt Smith Lake Coolidge Continental Divide. Each district will represent about 9,471 to 10,353 residents in a district of roughly 50,000. The plan awaits U S District Judge Santiago Campos in Santa Fe approval and follows lawsuits alleging unequal representation. The plan mirrors the one filed by Elsie Largo in Crownpoint and could apply to county commissioners. Governor Anaya later signed a law mandating single member districts. The local suit delayed the February election.

Man hit by train near County Road 5 claims life

A 21-year-old Mentmore man, Danny L. Wylie, was struck and killed by an eastbound train at 3:54 a.m. Monday while walking east on the railway about 90 feet east of County Road 5. Police report the incident and ongoing investigation.

Meeting set on welfare issues in Navajo Nation

Rock, Arizona. A planned meeting between the Navajo Division of Social Welfare and the federal Inspector General's Office may resolve eight months of dispute sparked by a federal audit condemning the tribe's social services program. Attendees will compare audit findings, note corrections, and discuss administration changes, including a sought waiver of about 500000 dollars misspent on the Senior Companion Program.
