Official says mine meetings were successful
Grants Bureau official Robert Block of the Office of Surface Mining reported five public meetings about the proposed Salt River Project coal mine near Fence Lake were productive. The 50 year mine would yield 81.3 million tons of coal, with 1.8 million tons produced yearly for the first 25 years and about 3 million tons in later years. Opponents warn of cultural impacts on Zuni Salt Lake, but researchers say the site would not be affected.

Gallup-McKinley Board to discuss blue-collar contract
The Gallup-McKinley County Board of Education will discuss possible ratification of a collective bargaining agreement with blue-collar workers at its regular meeting Monday. The session includes an executive session at 6 p.m. and a public session at 7 p.m. at district central offices. About 380 employees are affected. The board will also hear reports on school law and national Indian education meetings, plus a $425,000 grant from the Public School Capital Outlay Committee to fund portable classrooms and site work for Indian Hills Elementary.
